CHAPTER 12

As Saturday hit, I had the sudden urge to get more questions answered.

Getting done at the nursing home, I hopped into my car and decided to go to the Log Cabin. I needed to eat anyway, since I'd skipped lunch, and that way I would have a chance to talk to Lani.

She spotted me immediately when I entered, giving me a small smile and a wave. I sat at a side table, out of the way of the crowd. I watched Lani as she moved to each table, a stab of jealousy sneaking in as she moved with complete grace and little effort. A low-cut pair of jeans showed a line of her skin before a red halter covered it up, and she wore her hair up in a black biker's cap. It was the type of outfit that I would have loved to have the confidence to wear, but never would.

Within minutes she was at my table, sliding in across from me.

"I'm so glad to see you," she said pleasantly. "Are you eating?"

"Thought I might," I shrugged. "Haven't had much today."

She nodded, studied my face and asked, "What'll you have?"

I ordered a soda and a burger and sat back, enjoying the time to myself. While I sat there, I spotted two tables full of relatives, which waved at me from across the room. I waved back, but made no move to go visit. I just couldn't work up the effort.

Lani brought out my drink and food in record time. "I'm off in half an hour, can you stick around that long?" She asked.

"Sure," I replied. What else did I have to do?

I ate slowly, stretching the time out and watching as the place slowly shut down. There seemed to be an hour that was completely packed, and otherwise it was the luck of the draw.

When I couldn't sit still any longer, I went up to the front to pay and grabbed a seat at the bar. This section was more full than the restaurant now, the nightly drinkers coming out. After only a couple minutes, Lani saddled up next to me.

"Let's go for a walk," she said, and I followed her out. The night was clear and warm, though I wore a jacket anyway. Lani had slid on a jean jacket matching her pants as we walked out, though I couldn't imagine her being cold.

"I am sorry for the way I acted the other night," Lani began, heading North through town. "It was uncalled for."

With a sideways glance, I replied, "That's okay."

She laughed. "Sure, some crazy lady telling you the man you're dating wants to kill you. No big deal."

"Well, when you put it that way," I grinned, then stopped. "What do you mean, man I'm dating?"

"Jade, I don't have to remind you it's a small town. Rumors have a tendency to fly. Besides that, I could see in your expression how you care for him."

I noticed she refused to use his name, and wondered why that was. "Do you believe what you told me?"

She sighed, and I could tell this had bothered her.
